Zero Funds in President’s Budget For Beach Replenishment Projects

As reported in the Cape May County Herald by Al Campbell. March 28, 2012

RIO GRANDE — Beach replenishment is not important to President Obama, according to U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-2nd). That’s because in the budget he presented, there was zero funding for the Army Corps of Engineers across the nation, and that entity spearheads beach replenishment so vital to Cape May County’s tourism industry.

LoBiondo expressed his views Fri., March 23 in a visit to the Cape May County Herald.

Diana L. Hevener Promoted to Deputy County Clerk

COURT HOUSE - County Clerk Rita Marie Fulginiti has promoted Diana L. Hevener of Lower Township to the rank of Deputy County Clerk. Hevener of Lower Township has been a dedicated County Clerk’s employee since 1990. She joins Jo Ann Hunt in the rank of Deputy County Clerk. A ceremony was performed on Fri., March 30, 2012 by the Honorable John C. Porto, JSC in the County Clerk’s Office in the presence of family, friends and co-workers. Hevener is responsible for the management of Public Records in the County Clerk’s Office.

LCMR prom will be Convention Hall’s first event

CAPE MAY – The Cape May Convention Hall here will have its “soft opening” on Saturday, May 12, when it hosts the Lower Cape May Regional High School Junior Senior Prom.

“We are a definite go for that event,” said Mayor Edward Mahaney on Wednesday, March 28. “We are on track for our grand opening on Memorial Day, and are very pleased to be able to have the prom return to Cape May before that.”

County Democrats to Run Full Slate of Candidates

COURT HOUSE — Cape May County Democrats announced candidates for freeholder and surrogate.

County Democrats met at the Old County Court House here Tue., March 27, and held their convention.

They unanimously endorsed Jeff Sutherland to run for surrogate and Walt Deegan to run for freeholder.

Villas Man Arrested in CVS Robbery

As reported in the Cape May County Herald. March 29, 2012

VILLAS — Lower Township police arrested Joseph Salladino of Villas Tue., March 27 for the armed robbery of a local CVS.

According to a police report, Salladino, 34, was arrested in front of his Florida Avenue residence as he exited his vehicle.

The CVS, located at 1501 Bayshore Road here, was robbed at gunpoint around 9 a.m. Feb. 28. The robbery occurred after Salladino passed a note to the clerk announcing his demands and brandishing a handgun. Salladino obtained prescription drugs from the clerk and left the store.

State dedicates Cox Hall Creek park, stocks pond with trout

LOWER TOWNSHIP – Nearly 30 people showed up a Flynn’s Pond at the Cox Hall Creek Wildlife Management Area this week for formal dedication ceremonies and, more importantly, to watch more than 500 trout be released.

“This is a great thing for the residents of Lower Township,” said Mayor Michael Beck.

DEP dedicates Ponderlodge park, stocks trout in pond

LOWER TOWNSHIP – The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) this week formally dedicated the Cox Hall Creek Wildlife Management Area, made possible by a Green Acres Program purchase of the former Ponderlodge Golf Course in Lower Township on the ecologically important tip of the Cape May peninsula.

County GOP Taps Sheppard as Surrogate Candidate

ERMA – Cape May County Republican committee people selected Freeholder Vice Director M. Susan Sheppard of Ocean City as their surrogate candidate over two other contenders for the post at their convention at Naval Air Station Wildwood Wed., March 28.

Sheppard, of Ocean City, tallied 102 votes. Dean Marcolongo received 44 votes. Assistant County Counsel James Arsenault garnered 18 votes.

Bay Fishing Pier Proposed for North Cape May

ERMA – Long-time Lower Township residents may remember a number of fishing piers into Delaware Bay taken away by time and tides.

At a Mon., March 20 Lower Township Council meeting at the Erma Fire Hall, Mayor Michael Beck proposed a municipal fishing pier to be built at Lincoln Avenue and the bay, not far from the ferry terminal.

“It’s always been my Sears catalog Christmas wish,” he said.

Planning Board to Revisit Outdoor Wood Burning Furnaces

ERMA — A group of township residents submitted a petition to the township clerk calling for a voter referendum on the outlawing of outdoor wood burning furnaces.

Council voted March 19 to send the matter back to the township’s Planning Board for further consideration.

Township Council passed an ordinance Feb. 22 in a 3-2 vote prohibiting the installation of new outdoor, wood-burning furnaces used to heat homes and swimming pools. Units installed before the ordinance was passed would be allowed to remain in use.

Township manager continues to bear down on Cape Seashore railroad

LOWER TOWNSHIP – Mike Voll is mad. Fighting mad.

“This morning I witnessed a school bus almost rear ended in the fog because the school bus had to stop on Route 47 at the railroad crossing. I am asking to have ‘Temporary Out of Service’ (signs) until the train operator provides scheduled train service,” wrote Voll, Lower Township manager, in a press release sent at 10a.m. Wednesday. “Either they are going to operate or not, however, my concern is the safety of our children on the buses and others that must stop by law!”

Lower Township hopes beach access plan opens up state funding

Fishing pier could make return

LOWER TOWNSHIP – Officials here released a draft of a public access plan for beaches, hoping to move to the head of the class when it comes to state funding and grant opportunities.

“Our hope is, that, if we get this plan in, we’d have a jump on the communities up north,” said Mayor Michael Beck. “This (plan) is excellent; the prose, well, it is almost poetic in its descriptions of what we’ve got here.”

Voll Calls For Investigation of Seashore Line Funds

VILLAS — Lower Township Manager Michael Voll has requested Sen. Jeff Van Drew have the governor's office investigate where tax dollars went to enhance Cape May Seashore Lines.

He noted Cape May Seashore Lines President Tony Macrie claims he hasn’t received any federal dollars.

“The funding received is distributed through the state Department of Transportation, or the NJ Transit,” said Voll. “The public deserves a complete audit on how much funding Cape May Seashore Lines has received, how it was distributed, and who received the money.”
